In this essay I will be explain my thoughts on the statement “Violence is the best way of achieving change” and famous people’s thoughts on it. I will be looking at Gandhi, Martin Luther King and Malcom X. Some people believe that violence is not the way of achieving change, so they would have led non-violent protests, although on the other hand some people feel strongly that violence is the best way. I aim to argue that violence is the best way of achieving change; however some people will feel strongly against this, such as Gandhi. MLK used both violent and non-violent protests. He grew up with white mates until his mother told him the history of black people in America. This changed his beliefs instantly. Agape is a Greek term for one of the four types of love in the Bible. Jesus showed agape love and commands his followers to do also. MLK did many speeches expressing his beliefs, which were not violent, and led many non-violent protests along the streets of America, especially Alabama. He was a leading figure in organising the boycott by African Americans of buses in Montgomery. His aim was to make everyone live peacefully, with peace everywhere with no violence. He was firmly against violence and he thought that you should only use non-violence to get your word spread and to achieve change. He led many protests across the streets of America and he was a very popular, well-liked citizen and many looked up to his as an inspirational figure for his actions and non-violent beliefs. Although he didn’t live a fulfilled life, in his time alive he was extremely successful person. He was influenced by the ideas of Gandhi and how he only used non-violence to get his word across to people, and show he didn’t just result to violence. He did good things, however not so good things. He was liked, but disliked at the same time. Over his life time he did many controversial things which caused mixed feelings towards him. Malcolm X said that equality for black people should be achieved “by any means” this means that he believed that you should use violence if you have to, and that you shouldn’t be afraid to use violence to achieve what you have to. He thought that violence was a good idea and that it isn’t bad to use violence to achieve. In my opinion his early life really influenced his ideas and beliefs because when he was younger(aged 15)he was in a young black American gang which were involved in violence, drugs, fraud, theft, and just general crime,. He was 15 when he first got arrested for making money illegally. He got a big time put I prison. He learnt his lesson from then on and reformed his life once getting out of jail.
