In the article “Warning: Too Much TV is Hazardous to Your Health,” there are 4 main points the author is trying to make. The first is that TV and electronics interfere with quality time of families, this is because many American families watch television when they eat dinner or because they watch different programs therefore they spend their time in separate rooms rather than together. The second is that TV and electronics can be harmful academically by lowering the reading proficiency of many students and by affecting our physical brains. The third is that TV promotes violence and is the cause of real life violent behavior and can desensitize us to real life violence. They state that this negative affect to our brains can make “learning and working in the schoolroom environment difficult.” However, that is all they say about this so called “argument,” they present no actual evidence such as medical studies on the subject or actual people who have received damage to their brains due to excessive TV watching or electronic use. Even with this weak argument the author also argues that too much TV can affect a student’s reading proficiency which they support with statistics from the National Center of Education Statistics, such as the percentage of reading proficient students who watch an hour or less of …show more content…

I know that in my case that is not true, action movies and crime shows are probably my favorite genres and I have never found myself to have violent behavior as a matter of fact I hate any kind of confrontation whether it is verbal or physical. They do however provide some statistical facts such as a 32-year-old study. The author’s argument that TV violence desensitizes its viewers does coincide with the desensitizing theory we read about in one of our class readings. However, in the end it is just a theory and the author doesn’t use any actual evidence to support that theory so how can any reader know for sure if it is true or not.
When the author claims that TV and electronics are the main cause of obesity, they support that argument with a statement from a credible source, the director of the Centers for Disease Control. This sources states that a good way to prevent sedentariness is to turn off the TV but nowhere is there a statement from a credible source stating the watching TV is the #1 main cause of obesity in America. They even encourage you to cancel your cable subscription and to use that money towards books. However, isn’t sitting and reading also a sedentary
