1. After watching FOX’s Sleepy Hollow there are many differences between the short story and the show. The two most significant and meaningful changes in my opinion are Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman. In the story Crane is a goofy looking individual, who works as the town’s school master, and is trying to gain the love of Katrina.
Well,this paper is about the differences of the book,Sleepy Hollow and the movie of the same name. They are quite different, in fact, more different than similar. Not that it’s crazy surprising considering hollywood rarely does a good job of portraying people,books,comic books,etc. I mean, just look at The Lightning Thief or The Last Airbender or basically any movie based on a comic book or book. Enough of talking about other movies.

Ichabod likes a girl named Katrina Van Tassel, but the only thing in his way is Brom Bones. The two versions of “Sleepy Hollow” incorporate many similarities and differences.

Washington Irving’s, The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. is a collection of thirty-four of his essays and short stories. Attributed to the fictional Dutch historian character, Diedrich Knickerbocker, are two of Irving’s most popular stories, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle. Rip Van Winkle is the story of a Dutch villager, living at the foot of the Catskill mountains before and after the American Revolutionary War. Van Winkle is genuinely loved by the people of his village, especially by the children whom he tells ghost stories to, plays with, and gives toys. However, this simple, easy-going man has one great error in his character: he is incredibly lazy, despising work in all forms.
Ichabod Crane is described in Washington Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" as a lean and lanky schoolmaster who has come to the small Dutch settlement of Sleepy Hollow to teach. He is described as awkward and unattractive, with a long nose, bony arms and legs, and a skinny neck. Despite his appearance, Ichabod is portrayed as a man of great ambition who aspires to rise in society and win the heart of the wealthy and beautiful Katrina Van Tassel. Irving's overall tone toward his protagonist is mocking and satirical. Throughout the story, Ichabod's vanity, greed, and cowardice are depicted in a humorous and exaggerated manner, making him a somewhat comical figure.
Imagery is defined as the use of “figurative language to represent objects, actions, and ideas” in a way to “appeal to our physical senses” (LiteraryDevices Editors). Washington Irving is an American author during the early ages of an independent America. Taking place before and after the American Revolution, Irving offers offers a unique perspective on small American towns. Throughout his short story Rip Van Winkle, Irving incorporates the element of imagery to connect the audience to the setting, relate the character to the audience, and enhance the reader's experience. Irving writes as the main character, Rip Van Winkle.
Irving's use of the supernatural theme is investigative and makes for a great story but lacks certainty. Make note of Brom and the fact that he laughs every time the abduction is mentioned. Also the narrator never really addresses the sadness of the townspeople. It seems like they were unaffected and will continue their usual routine. The people of sleepy hollow are never
Misogyny is the dislike of, contempt for, or prejudice of women; Washington Irving has been accused of misogyny because of the treatment of women in his stories and their content. Washington Irving was a writer during the 1800’s, and some of his most popular works include “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Within these tales and other works of Irving’s, aspects of misogyny is discernible, though there is debate about whether the author himself was a misogynist. I believe that the misogyny that is shown throughout a select few of Irving’s works is due in part to the time period, not entirely Irving, himself.
Also, In the Devil and Tom Walker, Irving didn’t make the devil very scary, he made him seem like a friend to Tom, so it wasn’t even that scary. This was demonstrated when the devil said to Tom, “You are the usurer for my money! When will you want the rhino?” (Irving 5) Unlike the Devil and Tom Walker, The legend of Sleepy Hollow drew me into the story because there was more suspicion. On the contrary, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow also had that horror factor to it.

Irving’s Depiction of Women Letty Cottin Pogrebin once said, “When men are oppressed, it’s a tragedy. When women are oppressed, it’s tradition.” Washington Irving is at times sanctioned as being a misogynist as a result of his well-known writings such as The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. While his depictions of women represented in his writings were heinous, I do not believe Irving was a misogynist.

Unlike other works, Irving described the happened events in Germany. All these hinted at that Irving wanted to ruin the old fences around Europe that formulated for many years.
American mythologies have been a part of our culture for many years and enriched our folklore; it has been transmitted through many generations. Our ancestors have enjoyed these American mythologies because they have a way of keeping legendary figures alive. Washington Irving’s in his ‘Rip Van Winkle’ introduces us to a new world of imagination using strange characters experiencing mysterious events in exciting places. Rip Van Winkle is a regular man with an extraordinary story. The biggest twist in this story is that Rip falls asleep for 20 years!
