In the book When the Emperor Was Divine by Julie Otsuka the author very wisely introduces the family’s reason for moving and the father’s arrest at a gradual rate. I think the main reason Julie Otsuka does this is to create a sense of awe and wonder when these reveals occur. First, the author so brilliantly begins her novel by giving the reader hints about the reason the family is moving like, “the sign had appeared overnight. On billboards and trees and on the back of bus-stop benches”(1). These slight clues has every reader at the edge of their seat anticipating what the sign might mean and how it involves the main character.
