When people think of golf, the first name that pops into their mind is Tiger Woods. Tiger has 79 professional golf tournament wins and 14 major championships. Even though Tiger still hasn’t passed Jack Nicklaus’ 18 major championship record people still believe that Tiger Woods is the greatest golfer who has ever lived. While he is considered one of the greats, Tiger’s career hasn’t been all positive. His last victory in a major tournament was in the 2008 United States Open. In his article, “Why Tiger Will Never Win a Tournament Again,” author Matt Cochran advocated that because of this slump, Tiger Woods’ days of dominating the golf course is over. He states, “In no way am I a Tiger Woods hater. Eldrick has been my idol for my entire life (on the golf course) and that’s why it pains me to write this, but Tiger Woods will never win a tournament again.” Cochran explains that he’s a fan of Tiger, even stating that Tiger is his idol, however, he is confident that his best days are behind him, including those days which included hoisting a championship trophy above his head. Because the author himself is a die hard fan of Tiger Woods, and the people reading his article are most likely fans themselves, Cochran’s disclaimer strengthens his argument. The readers are more trustworthy of Cochran’s opinion now that he states that he himself is a Tiger Woods fan. Without this disclaimer, readers would believe that Cochran was a “Tiger Woods hater”, making readers unwilling to trust the author for hating a man whom they believe is great. Cochran stating that it is a “pain” for him to even write the article, bring an emotional appeal to the reader. Showing Cochran is sincerely sorry for even writing the article of how his idol won’t win again. The emotional appeal strikes audiences, showing that even though Cochran wishes Tiger would win another, he knows that Tiger won’t. Since the author himself is brought to this realization, it convinces the reader that they too will realize that Tiger won’t win
