The Montgomery Bus Boycott is one of the most iconic examples of civil disobedience which “took place from December 5, 1955 to December 20, 1956” (History, 2010) in Montgomery, Alabama. The boycott was a nonviolent protest against segregation that required African Americans to sit in the back of the bus and give up their seats to white passengers. The refusal of Rosa Parks to give up her seat on a bus started a year-long boycott of the Montgomery city bus system, which was led by Martin Luther King Jr. This essay will analyze the goals of the Montgomery bus boycott and examine whether it was successful in achieving its goals.
