Jefferson and Hamilton had different views on how the government should be runned. Jefferson believed farmers were the center of the economy so, he feared that a manufacturing economy would corrupt the U.S.. Hamilton opposed Jefferson, he wanted the government to promote trade and manufacturing because he favored the growth of cities. Hamilton wanted more power to the government than the states. Jefferson disagreed and he feared the government might try to take powers given to the states.
But, the Election of 1796 was the first election in American history where political candidates began to run for office as members of organized political parties that held strongly opposing political principles. Why are there only two political parties only? There are a few different beliefs in why there are only two political parties that dominate. One of the reasoning is that a two-party system arose in the U.S. from early political battling between the Federalist and the Anti-Federalist. The Development of the Two Party Systems After the new United States congress completed its task of creating a Bill of Rights, it turned its attention to the issue of financing the new government.

Brianna Whorley 2A Current Event 1 In response to the Orlando shooting, protests broke in Congress about the controversy on gun control. During this protest many republicans tried to stop the sit-in by shutting down cameras that were broadcasting the sit-in on national TV; however, democrats stood their ground by taping the speeches and posting them via periscope and Facebook. One democrat stated that, “the sit-in was breaking rules anyway.” By Wednesday afternoon many democrats and over 34 senators out of the 44 that were attendance were on the floor of the house (some literally on the floor).
Most countries in the world that practice democracy use a multi-party system. The United States does practice democracy, but only uses two parties when going through elections. The parties are the democrats and the republicans. One person from each party is chosen to represent their party. The presidential election is when those two representatives from each party go head to head to try to win the vote of as many states they can.
Why has American political history been dominated by the two-party system? When and how have third (or fourth) parties challenged this status quo? The elections of 1796 changed the course of American politics forever. The 1796 elections were the first elections where the presidential candidates represented opposing organized political parties for a place in office. Political parties are alliances, “of like-minded people who work together to win elections and control of the government [...] for the ability to put their philosophies and policies into effect” (“Political Parties”).
For the most part our country has two main parties, Democrats and Republicans, but it has not always been only those two who have been dominant. For instance, during the Jacksonian era, the opposing party against President Jackson was the Whig Party, which, at one point, came into the two party system along with the Democratic Party. The Whig party stood for less government involvement and they feared tyranny. It consisted of mostly protestants, and for a while gained a substantial amount of followers until its downfall over the subject of slavery. Aside from a few instances, the United States’ main two parties have tended to stay either Democratic or Republican.

The first two parties that emerged were the Federalist party and the Democratic-Republican Party. Both the Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans had very different views for the government and the country. The Federalists believed in a loose construction of the Constitution while the Democratic-Republicans believed in a strict construction.
The Two-Party system soon controlled the decisions of all Americans. This is all this country has ever known, and if it were to every drastically change, our country would spin into ultimate turmoil. This system works
Thomas Jefferson once said. “There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties”. The reason he said this was because he feared a strong central government.
