This piece is a short story mainly because it was separated into paragraphs instead of stanzas. The Story of an Hour has all elements of a story; exposition, rising action, falling action, climax, and resolution. The exposition was stated at the beginning when the sister, wife, and the husband’s friend was introduced and when it described the setting (which was in the wife’s house) The rising action was when she decided to leave her room and walk down with her sister and then she saw her husband. The news of her husband’s death sent the wife down the path that ended her life. If all the facts had been accurate, there would’ve been a possibility that she could’ve stayed alive, or at least until her husband got home to say one last goodbye. Once she heard the news she started to realize that her life was over and had no purpose so she let her sickness take over. “He had only taken the time to assure himself of its truth by a second telegram, and had hastened to forestall any less careful …” proves that the friend had not been careful with and sure of the news before he delivered it, and this was the news that ended up ending Mrs’ Mallard’s life. His mistake and miscommunication had proved fatal.
