“Why literature Matters” Analytical essay In the article “Why literature matters” by Dana Gioia he builds an argument by explaining how reading is declining more in America and, how it is causing a negative impact on society. Gioia has various evidence to support his statement, that the declining of reading is causing a negative impact. In Gioia’s article “why literature matters” he states that in young adults reading has further more decreased with this piece of evidence that he used. “The most worrisome finding in the 2002 study, however, is the declining percentage of Americans, especially young adults, reading literature.” (Gioia Pg2). The type of evidence that he used was statics. He used statics as evidence to support his argument that reading has decreased over the years and, that it is having a negative effect on most young adults. The significance of reading has become a persistent theme in the business world.” (Gioia Pg5). He uses the effect to better support his argument that the declining of reading is having a negative impact on society, especially in the business world of today. Using the business world of today he connects how it will effect society negatively. It helps support his argument. Another piece of evidence in the business world that he uses to support his argument is “Among hourly workers, poor reading skills ranked second, and 38 percent of employers complained that local schools inadequately taught reading comprehension.” (Gioia Pg6).
