Analyzing Dorothea Lange's 'Migrant Mother'

366 Words2 Pages
‘Migrant Mother’ is a picture taken by Dorothea Lange with a Graflex camera in California, USA, in 1936. It is a portrait of Florence Owens Thompson with her three children. The original caption reads: "Destitute pea pickers in California. Mother of seven children. Age thirty-two. Nipomo, California.” The picture is part of a series of photographs commissioned by the Farm Security Administration to convince the American people of the need for reforms in response to the Great Depression. It is also seen as propaganda to distribute support by the American Government to the poorer areas affected by the Great Depression. The Great Depression is the most severe economic crisis that the US has ever seen. Everything was taken away from the people.
