Summative Assessment Essay – “Autism” In “Animals in Translation”, Temple Grandin communicates her journeys of having an autistic individuality, being able to decode animal behavior, explaining the challenges that people with autism decide to undergo because of their absorption into things, preferably animals. Additionally, in describing Grandin’s perception towards animals, she subjects herself to a mental condition, portraying her use of language and abstract concepts. For example, “I liked animals, but I had enough problems just trying to figure out things like why a really small dog isn’t a cat” (Grandin 1). Furthermore, in describing Grandin's situation in a conflicting situation, Grandin reveals her interaction and excessive knowledge of animals reflecting upon her confrontation with the boarding school children. For instance, “Autism made school and social life hard, but it made animals easy" (Grandin 1) ... I got in fights because kids teased me. They called me names like "Retard" or "Tape-recorder" ...because I'd store up a lot of phrases in my memory and I used them repeatedly in every conversation" (Grandin 1). Fundamentally, Grandin depicts herself in an unpleasant situation at school, as she did not fit in with the other children properly, due to her strong insight and attentiveness into things, while also portraying her ease into animals. Thus, the evidence displays that socializing with others can be difficult with an autistic individuality as Grandin was facing negativity in her individuality and communicating and forming relationships with other children was beyond her capability. To summarize, Grandin generates herself as an autistic individual who is in their own little world, being able to contemplate about the differences between animals and perceive upon their actions, which further creates a downfall in the way she should
