In the article “The Biology of Learning,” it explains how studying in a different way helps improve your performance in both tests and turning information into knowledge and how information is different from knowledge. Everyone has a specific type of learning style, some may find that listening helps them memorize better while other prefer rereading the material. Sleeping is then explained to how we should always get a good amount of sleep as well as the consequences and benefits. Also, the article then clarifies the definition of multi-tasking. Many people would like to say they study everyday and make sure they understand what they are trying to commit to memory. However, the other half wouldn’t be able to do the same thing. As of for me, I took a “Learning Styles Inventory” questionnaire and received that I am a visual learner. I usually study by skimming through the paper in the morning or try to memorize all the information into my short term memory. This isn’t a good method of learning because the whole reason of having an education is to have knowledge. Visual learner means that instead of listening to the teacher I am able to do the work properly by reading the directions. A few methods that can help me according to the site would be to look at the material (i.e. maps, notes, etc.) Sleeping takes on a big role for studying and turning information into knowledge. People tend to study hard the day before an exam and sleep around three o’clock in the morning. According to the article, however, it states that a good night’s sleep actually improves performance rather than having lack of sleep will be the result of cramming and ruins your focus. The reason behind having a good night’s sleep is because throughout the day when you have gathered all of the information sleeping consolidates your memory. A way people also study would be to multi-task. They either listen to music, eat, watch television, text their friends. However, according to the article, multi-tasking does not exist. This just increases your stress and uses brain energy. I think multi-tasking is just a way to get distracted and an excuse to not study or do any work. To improve your performance you can also self-test yourself which is known to be the “key of learning.” Self-testing helps improve your understanding for the information and can also help give clues on what is important to know what to learn if your know the other half of the information.
