Why ASL? Or Through Your Child’s Eyes

In the Deaf Culture there are additional benefits of teaching children and kids American Sign Language than you can anticipate. The video “Through Your Child’s Eyes was a partnership by the California State University and the California Department of Education to inquire what they know about bilingualism and ASL. Many of us don’t know that American Sign Language can be beneficial to all measures of hearing children and adults. American Sign Language essentially benefits families with people who have different hearing levels.

In the video Michelle Tompkins, who is an Early Childhood Education Teacher Specialist, expressed “ It’s so critical for children to have the relationship to their parents, to have the attachment to their parents, and to have the love and caring that their parents can give them, and communication is the key to that.” (Through Your Child’s Eyes” ASL, 3:00-3:20).

Also, teaching a child or young child to sign language gives them the opportunity/courage to develop language skills quickly. Children would generally not develop those kinds of skills until they have tackle speaking or learning a spoken language. For example in the video, it states that “ Early acquisition of a language provides the foundation for cognitive growth, the thinking and learning skills children need throughout their lives. Through cognition children can engage in more complex actions and think more abstractly. Early Language is a critical aspect in this process.” (Through Your Child’s Eyes: ASL. 3:50-4:10). Educating children and younger kids, sign language is extremely helpful to improving and developing these language skills early. In the Deaf Culture: Exploring Deaf Communities in the United
