Literature Review
While little academic literature exists that examines homelessness or mental health specifically to the Metro Orlando area; much literature exists on these two topics both as separate subjects and as a joint issue. The concepts presented in the literature can be generalized to a specific area, such as Orlando, and provides a conceptual foundation.
Campbell (2006) examines concepts of homelessness using a series of case studies. These studies intertwined the relationships of a person’s mental state, state of home (or homelessness) and societal constructs for “home”. Since “home” as a concept or construct is very subjective it is important to view home from a micro perspective. For example, a person who is classified as homeless may in fact have a “home”. The authors offer suggestions as to the appropriate design for effective interventions, as well as barriers to implementing interventions. This article proves to be especially relevant as the mental health needs of the homelessness population continue to grow, more clinically sound services will be required. Additionally, the focus on dual diagnoses adds another often overlooked element that may impact the ability for homeless persons to find stable housing. When these concepts are applied to the programs offered in the Orlando area, a clear trend emerges. While there are several programs that address homeless and mental health as unrelated issues, only one, ANCHOR, addresses the joint issue. Unfortunately, as with many social services programs, need has outgrown program resources (“Aspire Health Partners,” 2014).
