Have you ever thought that everything had to start somehow? Like where did the wheel come from, or how did we start writing? Many people take these inventions for granted or don’t care about who worked hard to create them. Without these inventions, we wouldn’t have cars, a written language, or certain rules. Around 3500 B.C., the first, ancient River Valley civilizations were Sumeria, Egypt, and China.
Their architectural planning was highly advanced, and their buildings were mathematically sound. This means that the Mayan civilization was also very advanced. (Doc B) This genius thinking behind these buildings is what made the Mayans great. It is hard to imagine an average person today thinking outside of the box to create masterpieces like the Mayan buildings.
Technology used in ancient civilizations not only contributed to the well being of people in that era but also the well being of the people of today. Achievements of the past have paved the way for achievements currently. The Code of Hammurabi created a model legal system for other countries to base their legal systems on. By creating a written language the Chinese improved communication and promoted unity. Sumerian accomplishments influenced weaponry/tools, writing and helped develop architecture.
From the calendars we still use today, to the way we grow crops with farming, ancient civilizations such as the Mayas, the Aztecs, and the Incas influenced and created the way we contribute our skills towards the public. These people’s expertise proves just how they improved the world. The civilizations were advanced for their time based on their early society, their accomplishments, and the remains that are still remembered, as well as viewed to this day. One of the ways that the Mayas, the Aztecs, and the Incas were successful was through their people’s actions in a community.
During the Mesopotamia era (4,000 -2,350 B.C.E.), cities were built to help support the population, the inventions of everyday chores and issues (i.e. wheels, canals, pottery), and the rise of monarchy became the hierarchy and the most widespread form of government. Society was under a patriarchy – which the male population dominated political, social, and economic life.
The Sumerians practiced polytheism, the belief in more than one god. Sumerians believed these gods controlled every aspect of life, including rain, wind, and other elements of nature. 12 In larger Sumerian cities, temples were pyramid-shaped brick towers known as ziggurats. They rose upward in steps, with each level smaller than the one below.
The Mayan society and economy developed urban cities that traded extensively with one another. Their trade led to constant warfare. Religion influenced every part of this theocratic society. The Mayan's achieved architectual success when designing and creating their large pyramids. The Mayan's also developed a writing system and a calender.
The Sumer region was in Mesopotamia, which is now the current Iraq. This area is very famous due to writing which was the cuneiform script on the clay tablets. Social and economic organization was also a well known factor, followed by, units of time which was the division of a day into 24 hours as well as one hour into 60 minutes. Also, mainly because of the settlement that took place there.
Samuel Noah Kramer was an expert in the Sumerian language and in Sumerian History. Samuel believed that history began at Sumer in 3300 BCE because of the discovery of the Sumerians tablets. The Sumerians were the first major civilization to settle in the area. They spoke a Non-Semitic language unlike the other groups, which were more Semitic. The groups that were Semitic were the Hebrews.
The Ancient Israelites and the Mesopotamians are both early societies in the Middle East. These societies have similar social similarities, such as having the society being patriarchal. They also had the same political laws such as men were recognized as the head of the household. Another similarity is with inheritance. Usually men would inherit property, money, or other values.
Religion played an important role in civilization as government laws and divine kingship derived from it. Both civilizations were quite similar, but acquired some differences unique to each civilization. These differences include the environment, divine kingship, and sense of security from either nature or law. The idea and practices of ancient Mesopotamia originated from the Sumerians. Moreover, both Mesopotamian and Egyptian civilization diffused their practices and ideas to other ancient civilizations like the Hebrews and the Greeks.
Some of the major differences can be seen in the ideas of origin and the meaning of life. In today’s society, as a whole, most do not believe that the world was created because various gods were fighting or because a monster of chaos was destroyed. In a modern, Christian worldview, we believe God created us and the earth and that He genuinely cares for us. For us, the meaning of life is similar in the idea that happiness is a goal; however, we find meaning in what we do and how we impact others. The Mesopotamians on the other hand never gave much evidence to support the idea that they were invested in the people around them and making their lives better along with their own.
Which meant the son would follow his father in leadership. The government was ruled by kings and priests. Their society ranged from warriors, priests, merchants, farmers, and slaves. Mayans built decorative tombs for important rulers. Warfare played an enormous role in their civilization.
