Anders Behring Breivik was born in Oslo, Norway, in 1979 to an economist at the Norwegian Embassy and a nurse. His parents divorced one year after he was born, and he grew up with limited contact with his father, which was the first stepping stone towards his troubled childhood. As stated by psychosis researcher Ingrid Melle, Breivik’s mother requested help from the Child Welfare Services, and they found him very troubled: “he was in danger of developing more severe psychopathology and recommended foster care. However, the Child Welfare Services decided against, and after a short period of home supervision they closed the case in 1984” (Melle).
