Andrea Yates was a mother of five children ranging from six months old to seven years old. One day, after a normal morning, Andrea’s husband left for work and Andrea drew a bath and drowned her five children in the bathtub. The reason for this? She believed her crimes were right, even though she knew they were illegal. She believed she had been a bad mother, deserved to be punished, and wanted to save her children from Satan before it was too late. Andrea also tried to kill herself multiple times, because she believed she was a terrible mother. Clearly, Andrea had serious mental problems. Before, during, and after Andrea drowned her children, she believed she was doing the right thing by drowning her children. During an interview with a police officer, Andrea said she believed committing the crimes she committed were right, even though she knew her crimes were illegal. Andrea believed drowning her children would save them from Satan, and therefore they would never be possessed by Satan like she was. Andrea was diagnosed with depression more than once. After her first depression episode, she was given medication by her doctor and finally seemed back to her normal self again. After her first episode of depression, Andrea was advised to not have anymore kids because having more kids would very likely lead her to struggle with depression again. Andrea did end up having another kid, and her father passed away, and both factors lead her to severe depression once again. As a result, Andrea was hospitalized and given medication once again. Although the medication was helping Andrea recover from her second depression, she was not telling her psychiatrist all of her side effects and as a result, Andrea was taken off her medication. Andrea and Rusty listened to a preacher named Michael Woronieki. Michael dressed up in strange costumes, and screamed scary phrases like “You’re going to hell.” The Woronieki family drove a bus around the world to share their beliefs and teachings, and Rusty wanted to be just like them so he bought their bus from them. Andrea and Micahel’s wife would exchange letters, and Michael’s wife told Andrea she needs to be a better wife and mother. Andrea and Rusty believed all of Michael’s deranged preachings, which contributed to the crazy things Andrea believed about Satan controlling her. Andrea believed children were not accountable for their actions until they were ten years old, which is why she believed her children could escape hell if she killed them.
