Everyone grows up with unlimited dreams of being an astronaut, firefighter, or president. Yet as we all grow up most people’s goals start to focus on being more realistic about their situation. Andrew Jackson, a terrifying, strong-willed dreamer, found himself only expanding his expectations for his life. Andrew was born March 15, 1767, in a small area called Wazhaws between North and South Carolina. His family had recently immigrated from Northern Ireland, including his two older brothers, Hugh and Robert Jackson. Three weeks before his son’s birth, Andrew Jackson Sr. died due to a logging accident. Jackson’s brothers volunteered to join the fight for the American dream. Jackson also volunteered and the age as a courier. He was later captured as a prison of war and would be the only President of the United States to ever be one. Sadly, both of Jackson’s brothers and his widowed mother died during the war. His oldest brother Hugh dying from heat stroke after battle, Robert was also captured and ended up contracting smallpox. Their mother conducted a prison exchange for Robert and Jackson, where Robert shortly died of sickness after leaving. Later Jackson’s mother went and worked as a nurse to aid America’s fight and ended up becoming sick with cholera, dying shortly afterward. Two years later Rachel and Jackson realized that legally, Rachel had never divorced her ex-husband. They quietly remarried again in 1794, the couple never genetically had children, but adopted many of Rachel’s relatives. Jackson was known to protect his wife’s reputation and was also in a duel with Charles Dickinson, who was killed during the duel. The War of 1812 made Andrew Jackson a war hero, serving as a general he was given the nickname “Old Hickory.” Years later in the election of 1824, Jackson ran for President of the United States and nearly won. He started a following afterwards that would be called the Democratic Party. He ran again in 1828 and Andrew Jackson became the seventh President of the United States.
