In this short Metaphysical poem, Young Love by Andrew Marvel, the writer uses several literary techniques throughout his stimulating composition to grasp the reader’s attention. Marvel portrays his general theme of the poem Young Love, by giving the general idea that women should love at a young age to experience the different aspects of love but also to love no matter what the cause because, their time living is limited. Therefore, the theme expressed as the innocence and youthfulness of love. He begins the poem with imagery of innocence and youth with the use of words such as “infant” and “unsuspected years” in the first stanza. He uses this imagery to convey to woman, while they are young they are still learning about the world and the love that it must offer. Also, the writer adds the use of simile and rhyme in stanza 4, “Love as much the snowy lamb, or the wanton kid, does prize, As the lusty bull or ram, For his morning sacrifice.” (Marvel l.13). The use of simile is used to give the reader a strong comparison tool, in addition to the use of rhyme which enhances the poems creativity. Marvel also uses smile “Love…. This is seen initially in stanza 1 as the writer appeals to the purity of young girls through a sweet, compassionate and respectful tone and states, “Come little infant love me now” (Marvel l.1). As the poem progresses toward the third stanza, the tone is then contrasted to a belittling and vulgar tone as the writer now asks women to now lust and not love as he writes “Common beauties stay fifteen; Such as yours should swifter move, whose fair blossoms are to green Yet for lust, but not for Love” (Marvel l.9-12).
