Venus; A Symbol of Women Empowerment
Andy Warhol’s piece titled Details of Renaissance Paintings displays the face of the Roman goddess, Venus, the goddess of love, fertility, and sex. It was created by the infamous Andy Warhol in the year 1984, and it is a portrayal of the original painting, the Birth of Venus, created by Sandro Botticelli in 1482. This piece is made from acrylic and silkscreen ink on a linen tapestry, one of Warhol’s unique techniques, and it can only be seen from one side because it is hanging up on a wall. It currently resides in the Arkansas Art Center, but it’s original location was in the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Warhol is renowned for his iconic, whimsical portraits of celebrities and cultural icons, but in 1984 he focused his attention more to classical art. Instead of focusing on an elaborate background like the original did, he chose to instead focus on the details of her face and her flowing hair. The purpose of the lines in this piece is to direct the viewer’s attention directly to her hair, which is the main focal point of the piece in my opinion. The placement and curves of her hair are meant to imitate a sense of motion. It suggests that her hair is flowing lightly in the wind as she looks in the opposite direction. Additionally, Warhol chose to leave out the female sex organs that were originally in the Birth of Venus because he wanted to focus on empowerment of women, and not virginity and
