Angel in Aisle 3 by Kevin West is a well written account of an unlikely friendship and teaches the reader not to judge a book by its cover. West tells the story of his true life encounter with a mysterious vagrant named Don and their unlikely friendship that saved both of their lives. West brings us along in his growing understanding of God while we get front pew seats as biblical truths are revealed in life's growing beauty. However the rhythm of the story is like our lives, simple joys and challenges that bring us closer to God and all his creation. Also the author tells the story with a beautiful flow of words and gives a wonderful description of the happenings of his life. Kevin West had been a successful vice president of a bank when, in 1998, he resigned, having made fraudulent loans. Meanwhile he had drifted far from his faith and his pursuit of success had driven him to illegal banking practices. Waiting for his indictment and trial, he spent the time managing the small grocery store he had bought in Ironton, Ohio, as an investment. At his lowest, he cried out to God. The answer came in the form of an elderly and unkempt man named Don. This is a fascinating story of an unlikely friendship, one that changed both of the men. Thus there are many lessons to learn from this book. A major one is how we look at other people. If you're choosing a mentor, what sort of characteristics would you look for? How about someone professionally accomplished, a leader in his or her church and community, with a great marriage and terrific kids? Or how about someone who's all but homeless, poorly groomed, jobless, divorced, has little contact with his children, and doesn't smell good? Most of us would choose the former over the latter. Many of us would have written Don off as a homeless panhandler, never thinking God might have something for us to learn from him.
