10 questions Angel is a superhero film featuring a young girl who inadvertently gains the power to control energy when trying to enable humans to use a larger percentage of their brains. Her ability to control energy permits her to phase through solid objects and change her appearance completely. In this film she faces the evil super villain, H-Man, a psychotic ex-politician who firmly believes that the world needs to be cleansed using atomic bombs. Angel saves America from nuclear destruction by a mad politician. Time interviewed director Hugh Alexander. Hugh, you are well known on the arts circuit so why a superhero blockbuster? I wanted to show that extraordinary things can happen to everybody. I wanted her to be accessible to the majority of teenagers, not just nerds. I want people to see that an ordinary girl can be a hero and role model. Did you find Angel’s ability to change her appearance problematic when you were filming? To a certain extent yes but no more than expected. Realistically speaking I knew that having multiple actors playing the same character was going to be difficult but I believed that it could be done and now I have succeeded. What influenced you to choose to highlight her relationship with her parents and their acceptance of her powers? I feel that many teens today do not have a good relationship with their parents and I want to show teens that it can be done. Probably my main influence though was the rise of homosexuality into the spotlight. On many social media sites countless numbers of people post their coming out stories and the negative reaction that they received from their parents. Angel’s parents accepting her powers is my way of trying to show parents that acceptance is possible and good for all
