The Totalitarianism Goverenment In the book Animal Farm by George Orwell, there are many characteristics of a totalitarianism government which can be seen in Animal Farm and today in Mugabe’s reign in Zimbabwe. One characteristic, seen in a totalitarianism government is the state control of society. Napoleon the dictator of Animal Farm, and Mugabe, the president of Zimbabwe, had complete control of business, economy, and food in their regime. In Animal Farm, Napoleon had everyone work for the farm and grow crops. Napoleon wanted the animals to share the food equally. However, Napoleon took all the food and gave a limited amount to the animals. Likewise, In Zimbabwe Mugabe took all the crops that were grown by the farmers. Likewise, Napoleon had Snowball away and the other animals, so that there would be no one against him.Napoleon and Mugabe both plan to rule until they die. In addition to dictatorship, another characteristic in a totalitarianism government is propaganda. In totalitarianism all forms of media and information is controlled by the dictator. The dictator decides what the people should and should not know. In Animal Farm the animals gains the information from Squealer, who is a pig controlled by Napoleon. In Zimbabwe, the form of media and information was through the television, which was also controlled by Mugabe. Since the information is controlled by the dictator, the information may not always be true. The information that the people earn is also limited, not everything is put out to the public. In Animal Farm, Napoleon used Squealer to promote himself. Squealer manipulates the animals, “I trust that every animal here appreciates the sacrifice that Comrade Napoleon has made in taking this extra labor upon himself. Do not imagine comrades that leadership is a pleasure...it is a deep and heavy responsibility” (Orwell 50). Napoleon makes squealer tell all the animals that Napoleon has
