Animal testing was vital for the space race and for the future of space travel. Animal testing was very important because it gave more safety to the astronauts, made sure all the technology on the rocket ship was up-to-date and safe for the astronauts, and possibly saved the astronauts' lives. First, animal testing was necessary for the space race between the USSR and the USA because it was an extra precaution they used to make sure their astronauts would come home safely. Animal testing was necessary for the space race and modern advancements in space travel. The USA and the USSR were competing in the space race, where they would race to the moon to show which country was better and which country had better technology. Laura Lewis says that there are very few animal space missions, and that NASA does not send animals to space frequently. Space animals were a leading and deciding factor in why humans today work to become astronauts. If it were not for animal testing, the United States and the USSR could have lost their astronauts, and they could not have made it to the moon. Second, animal testing was important because the animals made sure the rocket ships were safe for the astronauts. Space scientists in the USSR and America used mainly monkeys, chimpanzees, and dogs to send them into space. Scientists used the animals to see if it was safe for the astronauts to get to safety and come back unharmed. This event shows that space scientists were using animals to make sure that the astronauts would have a safe trip and be able to get back to Earth unharmed by space effects. This shows us that astronauts had to make sure that the astronauts could survive and that all the parts of the rocket ship worked. So, they would send animals to test out all the parts or technology of the rocket ship to make sure it would be possible for the astronauts to live and sleep on
