The topic of animal testing has become a well known debate lately. People are starting to learn more about the process of animal testing and the problems that come with it. Unfortunately, information on the problems with animal testing is covering up all the good that it has done. Animal testing should continue to be used as a way to advance modern medicine and verify the safety of certain chemicals, despite the public’s protests. Animal testing has played a key role in biomedical research since the 12th century. Animal testing was first introduced to the medical field by an Arab physician who used animals to test surgical procedures before he tried them on his patients. Since then, animals have helped scientists discover life changing treatments such as insulin, certain pain medications, organ transplants, treatment for blood disease, and so much more. Some experiments just can’t be done on humans, so we have to rely on animals to aid researchers in their discoveries. This is mainly because of how badly the animals are treated. Many animals that are being tested on suffer cruel and inhumane conditions. There are strict regulations for animal testing that deal with housing, feeding, animal comfort and health, etc. Even with all these laws, it seems that animals are still suffering. The best way to counter this issue is to become even stricter with the rules. Testing facilities should be more public about their operations and receive inspections often to ensure that all the animals are being properly cared for. Another way to help protect these animals is to limit testing to medical purposes. Many cosmetic companies test their products on animals however, most of the tests can be done on human volunteers. Limiting testing to medical research can help cut down the amount of useless experiments and cruel
