In the life of an average person, practically everything we use whether it’s household products, food, vehicles or medicine must undergo testing before it is available for purchase or public use. Medical procedures in particular is also involved in this same sort of testing. Scientists were pushed to find the best alternative because the only true way to resemble the human body was to use itself. That is when animals were introduced. Going back all the way to the 2nd century, animals have been introduced to the medical profession through experimentation. For this certain case, animal testing is the choice of study. There are many alternatives to animal research but we must consider the benefits and drawbacks. It is important to consider these two facts before looking into these alternatives. Animals must be fed, housed and cared for by properly trained animal welfare including veterinarians and technicians. This leads to animal research being very expensive and in comparison, other alternatives to this method are cheaper. One of the main arguments used by activists are that results from animal testing is not successful in clinical trials with humans. While it is physically impossible to replicate a human organ or disease with an animal, you can get an extremely good representation. This will get you accurate results that will provide much more success to the testing compared to something that isn’t a close depiction – like a computer. Animal research continuing shows that even though the price is extremely high, there is no “replacement” method that comes close to the precision from use of animals. The second fact is that animal research alternatives MUST be used whenever possible. By law, researchers must look into all alternatives and examine them to see if they are a viable option.
