Since the conception of recorded history, mankind has strived to learn more about the human body. Historical accounts provide evidence of research being performed on animals by first millennium B.C. scientists in an attempt to learn more about the human body. Animal research provides a way to learn more about living organisms without hurting or killing humans. Today, animal testing is used in several ways. First, it is used to help increase the lifespan of different types of animals. Next, it is used by surgeons to determine transgenic animals and how different body parts of these animals can help humans. Lastly, it is used to create vaccines, antibiotics, and treatments for cancer. Animal testing should be legal because it increases the lifespan of many types of animals, allows surgeons to use transgenic animal parts to aid humans, and also helps the development of vaccines, antibiotics, and cancer treatments. …show more content…
Performing tests on a few animals allows scientists to create vaccines that have saved countless endangered animals, farm animals, and household pets. For example, the vaccines for rabies, tetanus, and parvo virus were all created through animal testing (Cook). While rabies is a deadly viral infection that causes inflammation in the brain; tetanus is a bacterial infection caused by the bacteria Clostridium tetani. Tetanus causes severe muscle spasms sometimes to the point of fracturing bones. Canine parvovirus is a life-threating viral disease that compromises the intestinal track causing the victim to become dehydrated and unable to digest food or absorb nutrients. If it were not for animal testing, many animals would have fallen victim to these diseases. Animal testing is not only for human benefit; many animal lives have been saved by its results as
