“An estimated 26 million animals are used every year in the United States for scientific and commercial testing.” (“About Animal”). The California Biomedical Research Association states that nearly every medical breakthrough in the last 100 years has resulted directly from research using animals. This statistic is only growing and has doubled in the past years. Currently, animals are mostly being used for cosmetic testing and scientific experiments. There are many benefits to testing on animals such as cures and treatments. For example, the discovery of penicillin and insulin was discovered through animal testing. This has a potential to save many humans lives and well being. Research on animal testing is used for many helpful things but the cons do outway the pros. According to Human Society International , animals used in experiments are commonly subjected to force feeding, forced inhalation, food and water deprivation, prolonged periods of restraints, and infliction. (“About Animal”). Imagine if this was your life; being torchured, burned, nutrient deprived, stressed, and tested on day after day. This is a very stressful environment for animals to spend their life, and can be depriving to their rights. There is also forced enclosure to toxicity testing. Many animals are forced into toxicity testing which can include, oral force feeding, forced inhalation, and skin injection into the muscles of animals. Also, many animals are genetically mutated, meaning they have a permanent alteration in their DNA, which fit the needs of petty humans. We need to protect animals or no one
