Animal Testing – Helping or Hindering the Human Race? Animal testing for scientific and medical purposes in the United States of America is a really tough topic to choose a side on, because on one hand you are sacrificing the lives of millions of animals, but on the other hand there is a possible benefit for the human race and the possibility of saving millions of human lives. But, we have come so far with technology in the past few hundred years, I believe we no longer need animal testing in most cases, and if it is deemed to be necessary it should be closely monitored by the Humane Society and have to follow a certain set of rules to help the animals avoid pain. Supporters would argue that “nothing can substitute testing on a whole-body living thing,”, or that studying cells in a petri dish (referring to in-vitro testing) does not show a full body system, so it is inaccurate. (3) They may also say that studying on animals is the best way to predict how a medicine or treatment may affect a human without having to actually test on a human, because animals are very similar to humans. Chimps share ninety-nine percent of their DNA with humans, and mice share ninety-eight percent of their DNA with humans. In fact, there probably would not be many people supporting animal testing if there were not many companies or trusted associations that also supported it. Some valuable/credible endorsers of animal testing are the American Veterinary Medical Association (3), The American Cancer Society, the American Physiological Society, The National Association for Biomedical Research, The American Heart Association, and the Society of Toxicology.
