Since 500 BC., animal testing has been a practice that may researchers use to develop medical treatments, determine the toxicity of medications, check the safety of human products, and for many other health care reasons. There are lots of disputes about whether it is right or not for animals to be used in scientific and commercial testing, but the pros of using animals for research significantly outweighs the cons. Life-saving treatments have been developed as a result of animal testing, animals benefit from the research, and laboratories are highly regulated to ensure the best for the animals. Not doing so could result in unreliable findings. Studies have shown that healthy animals in enriched environments get the best results. In other words, it is better for the researchers and the animals if they follow the regulations that they are given. In Los Angeles, California, a veterinarian named John D. Young works for the animal research facility at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Their dogs go out twice a day with their caretakers, and they get the opportunity to play with other dogs. The technicians even spend a considerable amount of time socializing with them. Dr. Young pointed out that there are more regulations that apply to the use of animal subject research than there is for human subject research. No work in a laboratory could move forward without the justification of the Animal Use and Care Committee. This comes to show that the animals being tested on are not being abused and mistreated. Animal researchers are highly regulated by state laws and the federal Animal Welfare Act. Since 1966, there have been minimum living standards for animals in experiments, and regular inspections by veterinarians that are required.
