Animals have been used for testing for centuries by famous philosophers such as Aristotle, and in modern times have been a great use in aiding us to advance in finding cures for many diseases. In today, we come across many groups, such as the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), who find testing on animals to be cruel and unjust. We cannot deny that the usage of animals for experimental testing has benefit us greatly, whether its scientific or commercial. There are three various types of animal testing that are each useful in society. Scientific testing, being the most profitable, helps scientist test different cures on animals with different conditions. Commercial testing involves famous companies, such as M.A.C. She lists different discoveries in medical research that was influenced by animal testing. Many of our vaccines, like rabies comes from testing on animals. The makeup that women wear today react well with their skin because of several brave rabbits. Animal testing is a common practice that is even used in school. Students in STEM programs starting from their middle school can learn more about body parts by being able to dissect rats and frogs. In various cases animals who had certain diseases and conditions have been cured through this testing. Although it’s not a walk in the park for some of these animals, their sacrifice does not go in vain. Michael Brooks pointed out in his article titled The Truth About Animal Testing that, “In the 1990s, deaths from breast cancer dropped by nearly a third. Much of that success was due to the introduction of tamoxifen, a treatment that helps prevent breast cancer among those with a family history of the disease” (2012).
