Have you ever thought about what happens to the animals at a shelter that do not get the chance to be adopted? In some cases they may stay there or move shelters. In other cases, they are given to research facilities to be used as testing animals, which is wrong. Some shelters will even charge the research facilities to get the animals for testing. Animals should not be used for research due to the fact that their lives are being taken away, there are large economic effects and the animals are typically innocent. With this, the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) was created and is one of the only federal laws that provide minimal protection to the animals in the research facilities that are being tested on. The animals that are used are treated badly at the laboratories, they are abused and end up being killed basically from all of the tests they are forced to go through. In some cases, the animals are forced to become addicted to drugs, alcohol and even tobacco. From all the tests, the animals experience a tremendous amount of stress on a day-to-day basis, no living thing should have to go through that just to make someone more money. The stress that they get may also affect the way that the tests results can turn out, this proving that animals being used for testing in research is not good in any circumstance. As stated by Cimons, “We have cured cancer in mic for decades- and it simply didn’t work in humans.” This statement is additional proof that millions of animal lives are being put to risk with very little proven success for the human race. All of the animals that go through these treacherous researches experience pain ranging from uncomfortable to deadly and they are unable to defend themselves at any given time due to all the drugs and medicines that they have been given. In 2009, the USDA found out that 7.8% of all AWA covered animals in labs did tests without getting any kind of pain medicine. In Utah and said in Viega’s article, “Utah has and “experimental animals code” that permits shelter to charge researches a minimum of $15 per cat and $20 per dog.” I guess it is a good thing that the researchers are being charged for the animals. The animals that are given to labs to be tested on are typically all very innocent and are brutally abused and end up being killed in the long
