Animal testing is the use of animals in medical research and for developing products, for the purpose to determine the safety of substances. In plain terms, animals are used as guinea pigs to create new drugs, in order for human consumption. Throughout our medical history, animals are used as a form a testing. These animals range from rats, mice, rabbits, farm animals, fish, dogs, cats, and other non-human mammals. Scientists say that animals are use for the purpose of understanding diseases and to develop effective treatments. However, what are animals facing to provide these treatments? Is it really that effective? How does testing on animals account for the drugs that human use? Are all of these animals suffering to provide this knowledge? …show more content…

The law is called Animal Welfare Act (AWA). This act regulates the care and use of animals, in terms of research and testing. However, AWA does not protect all animals. Animals that are protected under the law, include dogs, cats, and nonhuman primates, such as moneys and chimpanzees. This only makes up 5 percent of the total amount of animals use in medical testing. The Animal Welfare Act does not cover rats, mice, fish farm animals, and reptiles, in which calculates up to 25 million animals used in research. As stated in the Article by Tamara Thompson, “laboratories are not subject to federal laws and inspections because they experiment exclusively on mice, rats, and other animals whose use is unregulated…” Without the protection of the AWA, these animals are left without an advocate, and subjected to the mistreatment and abuse in laborites all over the United States. The AWA is deeply flawed because it does not guarantee the rights of all animals. Even animals who are covered by the law can be “burned, shocked, poisoned, isolated, starved, forcibly restrained, addicted to drugs, and brain damaged, (Thompson). The Animal Welfare Act is only protecting 5 percent of animals; however, it is missing a larger portion of animal are that facing harm.
