The Animal Welfare Act was signed into law by President Lyndon B Johnson on August 24, 1966. This act to this day, is the only federal law placed in the United States that regulates the treatment of animals for testing and observing. The AWA only requires the minimum standards of care and treatment for certain animals. (AWA) The original law that was passed in 1966 states that dogs, cats, birds, mice, rats, and many other animals were intended to be used for purposes of research or experimentation. In our society today, there are now a vast number of cutting-edge non-animal research that scientists promises a brighter future for both animal and human health. Almost scientists are now even able to manipulate cells to grow 3D structures that work and look just like the human structures. Before one dies, they have the option of agreeing to tallow different parts of their body to be used for scientific research and those who agree, may have different parts of their body used to test the effects of certain drugs, products etc, instead of having to put another animal in harm's way. There are now skin and eye models that are made from reconstructed human skin that are able to replace rabbits in a study of testing cosmetics.
