Often when people hear about animal testing their immediate reaction is “This isn’t right,” or “The poor animals are being tortured for no reason.” In reality though, using animals for research testing is essential. In order to study how medicines and chemicals affect living organism; they must be tested on a living organism. This leaves the choice of humans or animals. As humans we place a high value on all living things, and even the bible states we are the masters of all living creatures, “And God said…let them (human beings) have dominion over the fish in the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the Earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the Earth. (S2) People use animals for many reasons; food, farming, sport, hunting, and entertainment. Current treatments for Parkinson’s disease are being used because of experiments on the brains of rats. (S3) We can reverse many of the affects of strokes because of “clot-busting” medicines and relive pain from migraine headaches because of animal research. (S3) Vaccines for many diseases, such as Polio were first discovered and their safety was tested on animals. (S5) Because of vaccines, parents do not have to worry about their children getting diseases which they may have gotten. Along with people, animals also benefit from testing and are living longer, healthier lives. (S4) There are more medicines for domesticated house pets, and veterinarians can prevent animal diseases like rabies and heartworms. (S4) We also have been able to save some endangered species.
