Arguments Against Animal Testing

538 Words3 Pages

More than 100 million animals are killed in the United States each year due to scientific testing.(PETA) Animals are often used for product testing in labs. Yes, these tests can help science to progress, but it is an inhumane thing. These animals are defenseless, and it is cruel to put them through these processes. Scientists should not be allowed to test products on animals because it can harm animals, other methods can replace animals, and tests are not always accurate because animals are so different from humans. When scientists perform tests on animals, it often harms or possibly even kills them.
Animals are commonly force fed, forced inhalation, deprived of food and water, burned, wounded, inflicted pain and killed.(Procon) To test some cosmetic products animals' eyes are held open with clips for days so they can not blink away the product.(Procon) These tests are all so humans can find their favorite hair or makeup brand. In 2010 alone 97,123 animals suffered from pain with no source of relief. The majority of animals used for experimentation are killed after the experiments. 94% of drugs that pass animal testing fail when they are tested on humans. (Procon) These tests are proof that animals are bad models for human product testing. Using animal for experimentation is one of the most expensive ways to test products. (Procon) The United States spends more than $500 million on animal experiments. (Book/ OpenForDebate) There are computer models that can predict the toxicity of substances without the need for animal experiments. (Procon) They use virtual reconstructions of human molecular structures. Using an animal as a test subject is unnecessary with the new technology science
