There are over 26 million animals being used for scientific and commercial testing each year in the United States. Animals are being used for developing medical treatments, checking the safety of a product, and seeing the toxicity of medication before human use. Animal testing has contributed to many life saving medications, however animal testing is inhumane and cruel. Animals used in testing are put in experiments where there is force feeding, food and water deprivation, the infliction of wounds, physical restraint, decapitation, and many other inhumane acts. Alternative testing methods now exist that can replace the use of animals being used for scientific and commercial testing. Experiments on animals are inapplicable to humans generally. However animals can feel pain and suffering just like humans. Suffering is horrible, if it is humans or animals. There are 95% of animals who are covered by the Animal Welfare Act in experiments. Majority of animals used in testing are mice, rats birds, and fish, which are not covered by the Animal Welfare Act. These animals are vulnerable to mistreat and abuse in experiments. Animals protected by the Animal Welfare Act are being tortured and abused mentally and psychologically. The Humane Society of the United States in 2009 found 338 possible violations from the Animal Welfare Act at New Iberia Research Center. The chimpanzees there were put under so much psychological stress that they started self-mutilation, they also took infants from their mothers, and some of the chimpanzees would be awake and alert during painful experiments. Three live baby mice were left sealed in a bag at the University of California Davis center. The Animal Welfare Act does not prevent abuse from happening in animal
