Through the years, animal testing has become bigger and bigger throughout the years. Dating as far back as the ancient Greeks and Romans to develop their knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and to further their familiarity of the animal kingdom. The only problem was back then, anesthetics have not been discovered yet, and they were doing dissections, and examinations of the nervous system, and all the structures that are in it. The biggest argument for animal testing is that there have been quite a few diseases that have been cured because of animal testing, and that there are standards for what these animals can be tested on and with. Even though animal testing is just testing cosmetics and beauty products, some animal testing is with drugs and chemical safety assessments. Which can be very harmful to the animals that are being tested on. A revision was made in May to the Toxic Substances and Control Act, now restricting the use of cosmetics, pesticides, and drugs on animals. Another one is the Animal Welfare Act, which gives the minimum for treatment of an animal to be considered “humane.” The only problem is that this ac does not cover mice and rats. Because of this, most of the treatment of rats and mice don't get reported unless the experiment gets published. Now around 95 percent of animals used in experiments are not protected by the Animal Welfare Act (ProCon.org.) Now although many life-threatening diseases have been cured because of animal testing, we shouldn't expose animals to the harsh and dangerous environment of a laboratory for testing. We shouldn't expose animals because first, it is inhumane to expose animals to this kind of
