Over a hundred million animals are experimented on yearly, just in the U.S. This includes mice, rats, frogs, dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, monkeys, fish, and birds. The research labs that experiment on mice or rats doesn’t affect much because they can repopulate faster and produce more at a time. There are some research labs and schools that use animals that can’t repopulate as fast, for example, dogs or chimps. Researchers are finding alternatives to use instead of animals. Animals should not be experimented on for research purposes because it's cruel to the animals, it's ineffective, and it is outdated. A book written by Peter Singer started an animal rights movement in America in 1975. The book is called Animal Liberation, which it made people realize what goes on to animals in labs. It changed peoples views on the experimentation of animals. Some schools are putting a stop on researching animals for practice. Around 10 million animals are tested just in colleges and schools a year. University of North Carolina takes baby rats, soaks them in rubbing alcohol, and cuts off parts of them. Some schools give surgeries on fetuses while they are still in the womb. Not all colleges are bad, some won’t allow animal research but sadly, a lot still do.
Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics has a program to where retail stores have to tell their customers what products are and are not cruelty-free. To get the fur off the animals, the people have to slaughter the animals and skin them. A billion rabbits are killed each year for their fur. Animal testing is banned in the cosmetics industry. Clothing industries, such as Forever 21, promises to stop selling real fur from animals.
