In the U.S. more than 100 Million animals are being used for testing. Animal research is gaining very little when compared to the harm it is causing to animals. Animal research isn’t needed and it should be stopped. The severity of animal research is astonishing and there are many flaws that come with it. There is no need for animal testing when there are alternatives to be used. The opposition to stopping animal research says that it is a necessity for research, however, there are many alternatives to testing such as organs on chips. The opposition also says, that because mice share 95 percent of our genes they are a prime candidate for testing, as seen in an article named “ Forty reasons why we need animals in research”. However, even primates who have [96 percent of our] genetic makeup, fell short in making a completely safe product.”(Yashiki). In Australia more than 6 million animals are being used every year for animal testing. “During the [testing these] animals are [subject to being] forced to eat or inhale certain substances, exposed to radiation, and are placed in stressful situations.”(Yashiki). This quote is showing how horrible animal testing can be, and it still continues. Another example of the severity would be, during the “Major Physiological Challenge” in Australia, an official NSW category of experimental research. During these testing, animals would remain conscious for most or all the testing. The testing would include a large degree of pain or distress, which was not quickly alleviated. The total number of animals used in this testing was one hundred and twenty three thousand, nine hundred and seventy five animals. There are many flaws in animal testing and it is not worth the harm that it causes to
