Intro: Animal testing is a very controversial topic throughout the world. Animals have been used repeatedly throughout the history of biomedical research. Animals that are typically used for biomedical research include dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, pigs, sheep, monkeys, chimpanzees, and more because they have biological similarities to humans. Animal testing dates back to early Greek physician-scientists, such as Aristotle (384 – 322 BC) and Erasistratus (304 – 258 BC), which performed experiments on living animals for research. The testing done on animals in the past was very severe, including full body restraints being used on animals and alternative methods that were also cruel. The Animal Welfare Act establishes requirements concerning the transportation, sale, and handling of certain animals and includes restrictions on the importation of live dogs for purposes of resale, prohibitions on animal fighting ventures, and provisions intended to prevent the theft of personal pets. Since some researchers do not follow the laws set in place for animals testing there has been court cases amongst animals testing in the United States. For example, Animal Legal Defense Fund vs. Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin, the suit contends that the university illegally ignored its obligations under Wisconsin’s open records law to release full records of federally-mandated animal welfare committee meetings in which the controversial research was approved. Also, another court case is Breaux vs. Haynes, the lawsuit sued the amusement park and its owner for inhumanely confining Candy, a 50-year old chimpanzee who has been confined apart from other chimpanzees for more than 40 years.
