Over 61,000 dogs suffer in U.S laboratories every year. More than 21,000 cats are forced to endure painful experiments in U.S laboratories anually. Animals have been used repeatedly for scientific research throughout history. However, not all animal studies have been successful when humans were involved. Animal testing torments many innocent creatures for unreliable and costly research that is not necessary.
Every year several million animals die due to animal testing in for medical, psychological, and products research. Moreover, animal testing is something that shouldn’t be continued and for it is completely wrong and cruel. Animal testing started in the late 300’s BC. Aristotle and Erasistratus performed many experiments that involved living animals. Similarly, Galen, a greek physician, conducted animals research to explore the field of anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology.
Moreover, testing for cosmetics is obviously evil to animals. The fact that people take small helpless animals to torture them, so human could feel better. In the article “Animal Testing-A Necessary Evil?” Paterson reports that “Animals are also not just exposed to short periods of physical restraint but also prolonged periods. They can be deprived of food and water and wounds are inflicted, along with burns and other injuries in order to study healing.
Multiple experiments have been written to discuss if testing animals is an ethical decision and if it truly makes a difference in the human medical field. Over 3 million animals are being used for experiments every year, yet they don’t necessarily contribute to humans. Doctors have proven diseases that occur naturally in animals, are not the same as human diseases, which can cause conflict within the results. During the experiments, animals can subject to serve pain and torture that’s not good for their bodies. It provides us with ethically questionability; does it truly make sense to test animals?
To summarize, the opponents of animal testing believe that these experimentations are cruel and inhumane and it should be stopped. A lot of experiences did not give the same results for both animals and human. That means that the human body is different from animal’s body. Moreover, the animals suffer a lot from these experiments. They get burned, poisoned, and killed every day in the laboratories.
The study took a look at publicly paid for animal tests in the United States and the United Kingdom. The scientists used monkeys and rodents as their primary test subjects. Nearly 300 reports were collected from leading biomedical research publishers. Out of all of the acquired publications, only 59% of them proclaimed their study’s goal, the amount of animals that they used, and important traits of their test subjects. All of these factors are expected to be made public in order to display a credible and successful scientific experiment (Kilkenny et al. 3).
Animal testing goes as far back to greek philosophers such as Aristotle (384 – 322 BC) and Erasistratus (304 – 258 BC). Whom once performed testing on animals to advance behavior of something or who aspired to alter brain activity. However there was scientists such as Galen (129 – 199 / 217 AD), who used animals in order to attempt to improve various human activity within the body. Specifically focusing on cures and treatment for those who don't have them. Later, Ibn Zuhr began to use animal testing to benefit humans in which he would perform surgeries on them to ensure that the procedures would not harm humans.
Most of the animals that are experimented on during testing are either terminated or held in captivity. A mistake many people make made about animals that were used for testing is that they give them up for adoption or release them in the wild this is not right and humane for many reasons most animals that are used for testing have never been in a home environment there for they would not be able to cope with people. also a animal that was being experimented on will not know how to survive in the wild because it's probably been held in captivity all of its life so it won't know how to find food and shelter and will probably end up starving to death. There are other ways animals can be handled after testing one way is they can be killed using
Bill #2 General Debate Pro- I am in strong support of this bill because animal testing is a dated and cruel method. The anatomic, metabolic, and cellular differences between animals and people make animals poor models for human beings. The entire concept of animal testing is based on the fact that the discoveries found when an innocent animal is tested on can be applied to human beings. Thomas Hartung, Professor of evidence-based toxicology at Johns Hopkins University, argues for alternatives to animal testing because "we are not 70 kg rats.”
Testing, experimenting, assessing, and scrutinizing are apart of the procedures that harmless animals are put through every day in order to benefit the human life. What makes torturing animals with chemicals considered a good thing? Animals involved in testing include: rats, rabbits, hamsters, cats and dogs. Imagine a household pet, such as a cat or dog, being put against their will placed in chemicals with no good reasoning? Whether or not you’re human, living creature still deserve to be treated respectfully and fairly, and based on the percentages and experiments being placed on animals; there is no respect or fairness given.
Considering Alternative Methods: If you’re still in the camp ‘principally against anything anthropocentric’, then that’s fine. It also means you’re going to consider any animal testing outright wrong, if it’s purpose is to make discoveries for humans. That’s why alternative methods are so important, because they allow us to avoid human extinction – which would cause the extinction of all other animals – without committing the sins of humanity that Maheny talks about. If you’re pro-anthropocentric, but also get pleasure in needlessly slaughtering animals, then allow me to elaborate on just how ‘needless’ this slaughtering really is.
Animal testing for cosmetic products and substances should be banned completely because of the outcomes the animals experience after testing is completed. People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals writes, “ … This test may cause guinea pigs’ skin to become itchy, inflamed, ulcerated, or otherwise painful as a result of an allergic reaction (“Skin Sensitization Testing” par. 1). This suggests that the guinea pigs lost their ability to function properly after testing was completed. The guinea pigs don’t just indulge pain from the experiments, but they are left with physical damage to the body for the rest of their lives until they are put down.
Between animal rights activists and the scientists themselves, testing on animals has been a debatable subject for many years. Animal activists are known for being hard headed defenders for the rights of the friendly creatures on the planet, but the scientists believe in using the rodents for research purposes such as finding treatments and cures for genetic diseases and disorders. Thanks to the test subjects, scientists were able to find cures or treatments for breast cancer, cystic fibrosis, leukemia, and different types of sclerosis. Disorders and diseases like these are inherited, when genes pass from parents to their offspring.
Over the years, alternative testing methods has evolved that replaces the need for animals in labs such as in vitro testing. Cell cultures are now being evaluated in petri dishes; producing more relevant results because human cells are being used rather than animal cells. Ninety-two percent of the drugs that are effective and safe for animals fail in human clinical trials because they either result in being too dangerous or they just don’t work (“Should Animals be Tested for Scientific or Commercial Testing?”). Not only does animal testing result in being cruel and inhumane, it also results in inaccurate results for humans. The Animal Welfare (AWA) act isn’t obeyed in many testings.
Medical advances are supposed to help better human lives, however, animal experiments are doing the opposite. According to Ray Greek and Jean Greek, the co founders of Americans for Medical Advancements, which is a nonprofit organization
