Between animal rights activists and the scientists themselves, testing on animals has been a debatable subject for many years. Animal activists are known for being hard headed defenders for the rights of the friendly creatures on the planet, but the scientists believe in using the rodents for research purposes such as finding treatments and cures for genetic diseases and disorders. Thanks to the test subjects, scientists were able to find cures or treatments for breast cancer, cystic fibrosis, leukemia, and different types of sclerosis. Disorders and diseases like these are inherited, when genes pass from parents to their offspring. As we discover more about medicine, ethical inquiries will, of course, evoke questioning whether or not if it is moral to correct defective fetal genes. The point of performing these experiments on rodents is to reduce suffering and pain for human patients in the future. The most commonly used test subjects are rodents. Due to the extreme similarities between their DNA structure and our own, they are used 95% of the time for research purposes. Their size, life span, and gestation make …show more content…
For example, other animals that can be used are primates, cats, and dogs, but they only account for 1% of research. Primates, such as monkeys, are used for testing medicine to repel diseases like malaria, Parkinsonś disease, and spinal cord injuries. Also, another animal that can be used for biomedical research is the cat. Because of the similarity between cats´ and humans´ neurological system, they are commonly used for studying that particular system. Another well-known animal that is tested on are dogs. Since dogs´ cardiovascular and respiratory system are similar to a humanś, scientists have been using dogs to study heart diseases, advance medicine treatments and surgical methods, and for other research like battling immune system rejection and
