The Rights of Mice and Men

The rights of animals have been in conflict for centuries. While there have been drawbacks, almost every major medicinal development in the past century has been the result of animal testing, or a byproduct thereof. Companies that use animal testing take care so that the animals are not harmed during the process, such as Lo’real. Animals also benefit from the results of animal testing. Animals must be used in cases when ethics prevent the use of humans in testing. As an added bonus, mice, is 95% related to us genetically, so we can test on these animals while being led to reasonably conclude that it will work the same in humans. There have also been a plethora of companies that have tested on animals, which we will explore. Within this essay, i will share with you my view, and hope that i can influence your thoughts so as to persuade you towards my way of thinking.

Chimpanzees share 99% of their DNA with humans, while mice still share a significant portion, at 98% similarity. All mammals, as well as humans, are descended from common ancestors, and have the same set of organs that function in essentially the same way. Because both animals and humans are biologically similar, they succumb to many of the same conditions and illnesses.
Animals must be used in cases when ethical considerations prevent the use of human subjects. When testing medicines for toxicity, the lives of human volunteers should not be put in danger. It would be unethical to perform experimental procedures on human beings due to the risk of death. Some experiments involve genetic manipulation that would be unacceptable to impose on humans, which is why animal trials are necessary.
