A surgical blade slices through their skin without anesthesia; those wounds however are not closed, but remain open for research. They are trapped in a cage for their entire life left to rot a slow and painful death (Infinitive Phrase). Once they are gone their decomposing body is tossed in the trash without a care in the world. Animal testing is defined as “... the use of living animals in scientific and medical research” (“Vivisection” 1). The first documented animal testing occurred in 450 BC, by the Greek philosopher Alcmaeon (“Animal” 1). Since then it has only grown in utilization, however the reasons for this are senseless. Animals and humans are similar, but often animal testing provides no meaningful results and can even be a hindrance. The lack of an animal's exactness to a human can lead to countless unnecessary complications.

One of the main arguments for the continuation of animal testing is that there are no other viable options. However, this statement is completely untrue, as plenty of better options exist.
Harvard’s Wyss Institute has developed “organs on chips” that contain human cells. The chips mimic the structure and function of human organs and organ systems. Many tests show that these recreate human responses to drugs more accurately than crude animal experiments. Also, artificial skins have been created to replicate that of humans. The “skin” can detect allergies that a human would receive, while replacing guinea pig, mice, and rabbit test subjects that would usually be subject to painful prolonged experimentation (“Animal” 1). Unlike animal testing, these new technologies have a much greater capacity to help humans, as they are identical to human cells. Continuing to use inferior technology (Participle Phase), companies are
