Every year several million animals die due to animal testing in for medical, psychological, and products research. Moreover, animal testing is something that shouldn’t be continued and for it is completely wrong and cruel. Animal testing started in the late 300’s BC. Aristotle and Erasistratus performed many experiments that involved living animals. Similarly, Galen, a greek physician, conducted animals research to explore the field of anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology. Animal testing is a research done to see the effect of an experiment and product and after that results scientist decide whether or not to continue the same experiment to humans. This research is unfair and animals in this test don’t understand anything that is going to happen to them. Furthermore, animals “suffer painful procedures and isolations”(Source A) that really impacts the way scientists are saving human lives. However if we don’t stop animal testing, we could save lives but we won’t be helping the innocent animals the could be endangered and-and almost instinct. There are also alternatives that scientist could use to see if the product they have created could impact human lives. In this story, a rat, Algernon, who has a really low IQ has a surgery which could increase his intelligence level and make him really smart. After the scientists are confident that the experiment has worked they select Charlie, a human, to be tested and to have the same surgery done as Algernon. Charlie has an IQ of 68 and after the experiment, it has increased four times and then it's 204. Then Algernon starts to behave really weird and the scientist sees that the surgery is wearing off and that Algernon’s intelligence wasn’t permanent. Soon Algernon dies due to the impact on his brain and by this point, people know that Charlie’s surgery will have the same result Algernon’s. On page 371 of the book, it says “Burt, who is in charge of the experimental animals, tells [Charlie] that Algernon is changing. He is less cooperative; he refuses to run the maze anymore; general motivation had decreased. And he hasn’t been eating. Everyone is upset about what this may mean”(Flowers for Algernon).
