Arguments Against Animal Testing

Since the emergence of bio medicine, animal testing has been a focal point of controversy. Those opposed to the use of animals in scientific studies believe that it is important for humans to treat all living things with the same respect. Animal rights activists make the argument that we should not do anything to a piglet for example, that we would not want done to our own infants. In spite of these points, animal testing is a crucial part of advancing biology, medicine and the overall welfare of human life. It is justified for scientists to have a more invasive form of research ethics towards animals as opposed to humans as the benefits far outweigh the consequences. The marketing of the product led to the poisoning and deaths of more than a hundred people. As well, in the 1950's many pregnant women started taking the drug thalidomide because it was said to help with insomnia, colds, headaches and morning sickness. As a result, more than ten thousand children were born with birth defects that included deafness, malformation, blindness and even missing limbs. (Hajar, 2011) It would have been far less tragic to see animals go through the process of testing these drugs than knowing the emotional and psychological damage not only the victims went through but the friends and family around them. Realizing that these misfortunes could have been avoided if the researchers had taken the time to test the drugs first is a major reason animal testing is essential. Animals reproduce the same way as they would eat, drink or sleep; they see it as just a way of life. On the other hand, humans change their whole lifestyle just to have a baby. It begins from before their child is even born through buying a bigger house to make room, or saving money for toys, clothes, books, cribs, and diapers. The parent then dedicates the next 18 or more years of their life just to provide and ensure their child has the best life possible. Humans take the time to invest in their life and put the utmost importance on it and
