Since the 1950s, public support from animal testing has been in a steady decline and continues to drop every year. New developments are constantly being made throughout the world, so why are animals still being used as test subjects? Many cosmetic and hair companies do not test their products on animals; for example, Mac Cosmetics, Origins, Aveda, and so many other companies. However, there are still way too many companies that still do use animals to test their products. So many alternative ways to test products have been discovered and they need be used to eliminate animal testing. So many different animals are tested on, it is unbelievable that “Every year in the U.S., over 25 million animals are used in biomedical experimentation, product and cosmetic testing, and science education” (Harm and Suffering). This is about the population of North Korea. The different types of animals include, mice, fish, rats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, farm animals, birds, cats, dogs, mini-pigs, and non-human primates (Harm and Suffering). The reason so many different animals are used is because different animals are needed to test different products. For instance, rabbits are used to test the toxicity of mascara and irritation of the eyes (Zuckermar). This may not seem that serious, but some tests often result in death. During toxicology research animals can develop a toxic injury or disease, which often results in pain, distress, and/or death (Stokes). Monkeys are also often used to test on. Monkeys are used to develop and test the safety and effectiveness of potential human medicines and vaccines, which can cause them to be, poisoned (Bender 32). Other ways animals are harmed when tested on include; force-feeding, forced inhalation, exposure to drugs, chemicals, or infectious disease at high levels, ear-notching and tail-clipping, physical restraint, food and water deprivation, and so much more (Harm and
