When is Animal Testing Justified? We have many modern advances in medicine today, but the way we have access to them is not humane. We have advances in the medical field due to animal testing, but there was a lot of suffering along with it. Animals have suffered through a lot of pain so that we can have the understandings and knowledge we have today. Testing animals has been very critical to their health and even lead to their deaths, due to the conditions they are under. Animal testing is not justified because it is cruel and inhumane, also because animals are very different from humans and therefore make poor test subjects, and lastly they do not reliably predict results in human beings. The anatomic, metabolic and cellular differences between animals and people make animals poor models for humans. Paul Furlong, Professor of Clinical Neuroimaging at Aston University, states that “It’s very hard to create an animal that equates to what we’re trying to achieve in the human. We should not be comparing animals to humans simply because we are very different. Instead we need to have an alternative. According to the Humane Society International, animals used in experiments are commonly subjected to force feeding, force inhalation, food and water deprivation, prolonged periods of physical restraint, the infliction of burns and other wounds to study the healing process, and the infliction of pain to study its effects. Animals are put through a lot of suffering and pain all because we want answers. The US Department of Agriculture reported in 2010 that 97,123 animals suffered pain during experiments while given no anesthesia for relief.
