According to a study done by the FDA, ninety-two percent of drugs, which were produced from animal models, failed to be approved for regular use by humans after they were tested on humans (neavs.org). This means that the vast majority of drugs made from animal testing were not able to help humans and the suffering of those animal models was simply a waste. Elias Zerhouni, who is a medical doctor, researcher, and the former director of the National Institutes of Health, even went as far to say that animal testing has led research to stray away from being used for comprehension of human biology, and we should refocus away from animal testing to get back on track for medical progress (McManus). This shows that animal testing is not helping us understand and cure human diseases. Some people believe that such examples as the use of mice to produce Gleevec, a drug that fights cancer, is reason enough to say that animal testing benefits humans medically (amprogress.org).

Yes, these tests can help science to progress, but it is an inhumane thing. These animals are defenseless, and it is cruel to put them through these processes. Scientists should not be allowed to test products on animals because it can harm animals, other methods can replace animals, and tests are not always accurate because animals are so different from humans.
Testing on animals has helped to cure many diseases over the years. Every time a new vaccine or medicine is given to the public is probably been tested on animals to make sure that it is safe. No one wants to take or drink drugs that are harmful to them. Colin Blakemore states, “Patient might not know that the powerful new drugs Avastin (for vowel, breast and lung cancer) and Herceptin (for breast cancer) were developed after research on mice.” In other words, Blakemore asserts that usually when patient get the cures they don’t realize that they have been established due to the tests on animals.
Animal Testing Imagine being trapped in a cage for weeks, years, or even your entire life. You can barely move. You have no control or say to what happens in your life. You can’t choose when you eat, what you wear, what you drink or where you go. A life like that sounds tortuous, no one wants to live like that.

Millions upon millions of animals are killed mercilessly every year due to these experiments. “Most animal experiments are not relevant to human health, they do not contribute meaningfully to medical advances and many are undertaken simply out of curiosity and do not even pretend to hold promise for curing illnesses” (Animal). Not only does this testing waste animal lives, but humans as well. Because animal testing is so ineffective, many humans have contracted illness, irritations, mental problems, etc. because of these drugs being successful on animals and not humans.
Animal Experimentation is ethical There has been an ongoing debate whether animal experimentation is ethical and should be allowed. While many people disagree with it because they claim that it is ethically wrong to experiment on animal, many people disagree and think it should continue to be allowed. Those who favor animal experimentation argue that the benefits outweigh the negatives. Animal testing has led to a significant increase in medical discoveries and has saved millions of lives.
A huge organization that is opposed to animal testing is the Humane Society of America. They believe that cruelty towards animals for human profit is unacceptable, even though it is saving lives of millions of humans. However, there is still unreliability when it comes to animal testing according to recent studies. For example, “90% of drugs fail in human trials despite promising results in animal tests – whether on safety grounds or because they do not work” (Cruelty Free International p4). This shows that even if a medical product shows signs of promising outcomes during animal testing, the probability of it being effective on humans has a low success rate.

Animal Testing\ Experimentation Although animal testing has changed from many years until now, it is still a big issue in the world today. According to the article The Rights of Man and Animal Experimentation by John Martin, “If there is a need for animal experimentation in science for the good of man, this approach gives philosophical justification for experimentation”. It has been changing to help prevent cruelty towards animals during research and to get laws passed such as the Animal Welfare Act. This act requires that animals be cared for, have an adequate food and water supply, safe housing, and protection from extreme temperatures (freezing and burning).
Even though there are relevant results by testing on animals, such results can also be found by testing in some vitro. I am against animal testing because animals have rights, there are alternative methods for testing products and some deem to punish animals more than needed. Welfare, as defined by the Cambridge dictionary, can be seen in terms of “physical and mental health and happiness”, while priority, as defined by the Oxford dictionary, is "the fact or condition of being regarded or treated as more important than others”. The ethics of human welfare taking priority over animal welfare has long been debated. Although as a human, it is natural to prioritise human welfare over animal welfare, but in my opinion, it should not be supported. To justify my stand, I will be examining animal testing in labs, emotions of animals, and the use of animals in products.
